KOMAG Institute is the initiator of the idea of creating the Silesian Energy Storage System, understood by us as a comprehensive way of storing energy in post-mining areas to ensure local balancing of energy generated in unstable renewable energy sources and at the same time revitalization of post-mining areas.

The project is realized in close cooperation with the local governments of five large cities of Silesia, i.e.: Zabrze, Gliwice, Bytom, Piekary Śląskie and Katowice and constitutes a unique idea for a just transition. This applies to the Polish power industry, in particular Silesia, where at least two processes are being realized simultaneously: energy transformation and the departure from the exploitation of hard coal deposits and the revitalization of mining communes. In the long term, this should allow the Silesian economy to be based on state-of-the-art energy technologies, and on a national scale contribute to the development of state-of-the-art industries, neutral for the environment. Establishing this initiative and signing the agreement in the Ministry of State Assets between KOMAG Institute, SRK S.A., KSSE S.A. and IETU in July 2021 allowed the local governments of the region’s cities to be so widely involved in the Institute’s activities.

I am pleased to inform you that the strategy of the Silesian Energy Storage System will be the main topic of the Silesian Energy Storage Forum 2022 conference organized by us on September 6, 2022 in Katowice, celebrating the opening of the International Fair EXPO Katowice 2022. During the panel discussions, which we plan to start at 12:00 p.m., we intend to open the following discussion panels:

  • PANEL “Silesian Energy Storage System as a way to increase regional energy security”. During the panel, we will reflect on the challenges posed to the residents of Polish and Silesia by current development paradigms, including, m.in, diversification and regionalization of energy security as a sine qua non for future energy markets and climate neutrality of the EU;
  • PANEL “Silesian Energy Storage System – forms and possibilities of financing local investments in the area of low- and zero-emission energy” – in the discussion we anticipate the participation of representatives of the financial sector;
  • PANEL “Silesian Energy Storage System – balancing, monitoring and management of microgrids – technological challenge of our generation”. The discussion will gather experts dealing with the reliability of energy supply, the construction of systems enabling measurement, transmission, archiving, processing and visualization of measurement data and, above all, the management of energy generated from renewable sources at the local and regional level, in the context of the reform of the system. electricity, energy transition and national power system and decarbonisation.
